Artist's Comments

So I was reading The Wizard's Dilemma, and this otter-guy turns up, and I thought to myself, "Hey, cool! Otters are spiffy!" Later on, I thought to myself, "Hey, golden fur? Who else do I know of with golden-ish hair? Hmmm." Which was, of course, a really stupid way to come to the right conclusion about the character's eventual role. It was instant fangirl love. I had to draw him. ^_^

This picture, unfortunately, is not finished. You can see that he lacks whiskers, for one thing, and a background, for another. I would really like to get some dark, ominous eyes in the background, like with a shadowy or misty effect, but I have no idea how to do that. I'm using Prismacolor pencils, and any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to overwhelm the composition with a bad background.

Also, any tips on making shiny, glowy objects shinier and glowier?

So this is the Lone Otter Power? >.> Heh.
Gelpens? Markers? A bit of photoshop effects? I dunno. Contrast is good for shinyness. Glowyness is difficult. Though here I could say you could use more white, for the glowy part.
Love the color.

First off-- hey there, fellow YW fan! Glad you found our ~YW-fanartists-unite club!

Second--on Prismacolor pencils. The secret is to layer. Start with a thin-ish layer of one (darker) color, and then layer over it to get more intense, darker colors. As for a "misty effect", just know this: if you don't press too hard with your initial darker color, then you can color over it with white or light blue and that will show up over the darker color in a sort of 50% opacity-ish way. Uh...that's all the advice I've got up my sleeve, though. Hope it helps :)

(Also, would you like me to add you to the club memeberlist?)

Hiya. I'm glad you found my post--I've since been advised that people tend not to look down there.

I think I am on the member list, actually. Someone updated a few weeks back. Thanks anyway. {= )

For the picture, I've actually been toying with the idea of mixing media and using ink washes. We've been doing an ink project in my class, and I kinda like it. I'll keep what you've said in mind, though, in case I don't go that way. ^_^ I'll have to do a bit of experimenting and see how my sketchbook paper takes to it first, for one thing...

Ooh. Ink washing is fun too. Just practice before do anything to such a lovely drawing--wouldn't want to hurt it before you can really control the media, y'know :)

And ah, yes, Shima did update a few weeks ago; I'm sorry, I forgot. But excellent, you're all set.

But of course! *shudders at the thought of messing up in ink* And, thanks again. ^_^

Much welcome :)
